Badass: Making Users Awesome by Kathy Sierra
Make the user better at the thing, not better at your product.
Three takeaways for AI PMs
- Measure the user's competence, not the product's usage
- Design the moment after the first result: Most users of an AI feature get one impressive output and then plateau because they do not know what to ask next.
- Spend the user's attention on the skill, not the tool: Every confirmation dialog, setting and mode switch burns attention that should go to the task.
Do this Monday
- In your next metrics review, propose one user-competence metric for your AI feature alongside the usage metric and ask what would move one without the other.
- Before the next design review, walk through the first five minutes after a user's first AI output and write down what they can do next without help.
- This week, read your launch copy, list every promise about the user rather than the product, and check whether the current build keeps each one.
