Build by Tony Fadell
Start with why, make version one opinion-driven, and let data shape version two.
Three takeaways for AI PMs
- Write the why before the what: Before any spec, write the pitch to one sceptical customer: the pain, and the new technology that makes solving it possible now.
- V1 runs on opinion, v2 runs on data: There is no data on a product that does not exist, so v1 calls come from judgement and taste.
- Plan for three generations: Fadell's rule is that nothing works the first time.
Do this Monday
- Before the next kickoff, write the one-paragraph why and read it to a customer-facing colleague; if they cannot repeat it back, rewrite it.
- In your next roadmap review, label every AI feature v1, v2 or v3, and flag any v1 being judged on v3 expectations.
- Before the next launch, draft the press release first and strike every claim the current eval results cannot back.
